How to Set Up a Thermal Printer for Restaurant Billing (Step-by-Step)

Setting up a thermal printer for restaurant billing in India takes 10–20 minutes if you follow the right steps. This guide covers USB, Bluetooth, and LAN setup for Windows and Android. (FoodChow printers are plug-and-play — most owners are billing within 3 minutes.)
What You Need Before Starting
- Thermal printer (80mm recommended for restaurants — see 3-inch models)
- Paper roll installed (shiny/coated side faces the print head)
- Billing software installed (FoodChow POS, PetPooja, Posist, etc.)
- USB cable OR LAN cable OR Bluetooth device
- Windows PC / Android tablet / phone
Setup Method 1: USB (Most Common for Counter Billing)
Step 1: Install the driver
- Download the driver from the manufacturer's website or your seller
- For printers bought at FoodChow Store, drivers are available from FoodChow support
- Run the installer and follow on-screen instructions
Step 2: Connect the printer
- Plug the USB cable from printer to your billing computer
- Turn on the printer — it should auto-print a test page
Step 3: Add printer in Windows
- Control Panel → Devices and Printers → Add a printer
- Select your thermal printer and set it as the default printer
Step 4: Configure in POS software
- Open FoodChow POS → Settings → Printer Settings
- Select the USB port (usually COM3 or COM4), set paper width to 80mm, print a test receipt

Setup Method 2: LAN / Ethernet (Best for Kitchen KOT)
Step 1: Connect to network
- Plug the LAN cable from printer to your router or switch; the printer auto-assigns an IP (or set a static IP)
Step 2: Find the printer's IP address
- Print a self-test page (hold the Feed button while powering on) — the IP prints on the page (e.g., 192.168.1.100)
Step 3: Add in POS software
- FoodChow POS → Settings → Printer Settings → "Network Printer"
- Enter the IP address and port 9100, assign it as "Kitchen Printer"
Step 4: Test

Setup Method 3: Bluetooth (For Mobile/Android Billing)
Step 1: Turn on Bluetooth on your phone/tablet
Step 2: Pair the printer
- Hold the printer's Bluetooth button until the light flashes
- Android: Settings → Bluetooth → Scan → select your printer → pair with PIN 0000 or 1234 if asked
